Animal Welfare Sentience Bill – UK
The bill will make it a law to recognise that animals have feelings and their welfare should be considered and protected as a result. It is described as aiming ‘to make provision for an Animal Sentience Committee with functions relating to the effect of government policy on the welfare of animals as sentient beings.’

UK Government launches ‘Action plan for Animal Welfare’ which recognises animal sentience
The UK government is embarking on an ‘Action Plan for Animal Welfare’ which will see increased protections for domestic, livestock and wild animals.  After decades of campaigning from animal rights groups, animals will finally be formally recognised as sentient in UK law.

On 10 June 2021, the European Parliament urged the European Commission to make cages for farmed animals illegal across the European Union by 2027, adopting a resolution on the ‘End the Cage Age‘ European Citizens’ Initiative.
The resolution was passed by an overwhelming majority, with 558 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in favour to 37 against and 85 abstentions. It urges the Commission to revise the outdated EU directive on farmed animals,
