Animal advocacy is the fight for the humane treatment of animals and the prevention of their suffering.

What does it mean and what can you do to advocate for animals?

Choose the type of animal/cause you want to help – companion animals, farm animals, animals used for research, animals used for entertainment, wild animals etc.  Or choose a type of animal, e.g dogs, elephants ..whatever.  Research and learn all you can on the situations they face.

‘The end goal should always be a world where humans and animals co-exist peacefully. And if that means animal rights activists and animal welfare proponents co-existing peacefully in the meantime, then we will get there even faster.’  ( sentientmedia.org)

Be open to helping animals wherever and whenever you can and try to make the world a better place for all creatures.

Jane Goodall interview with HSUS

JF: What is the most important thing that ordinary people, young and old, can do to protect chimpanzees and other animals?

JG: Learn about the issues. Find what it is that you really care about so you can devote real energy to a cause. Different people can help in different ways. Some can give money to animal welfare or conservation programs, some can volunteer in a sanctuary. Some can “adopt” a chimpanzee or other wild animal in a sanctuary, which will pay for care for a year, and the person gets a certificate, photo and report about that particular animal. Some can adopt a stray dog or cat. Some can write letters to local politicians about plans to destroy natural habitat to drill for oil or build a road. Some can refuse to buy products that harmed animals—like meat, eggs or milk from factory-farmed animals. Some can join organizations that are fighting various practices, like the culling of badgers in the UK, the hunting of wolves in North America, and so on. Or support a rewilding project, giving the land back to nature.

When faced with all the cruelty animals face every single day, taking action can feel daunting, even hopeless.

But consider the old adage about the young girl on the beach, after a storm where thousands of starfish have washed ashore. The girl begins picking them up, one by one, and throwing them back into the ocean. A man walks by and says to her, “But there are too many for you to save them all. You’ll never make a difference.”

The girl shrugs, picks up another, and says, “I can make a difference for this one.”

Be a Flight Angel: How to Help Rescue Dogs as a Flight Volunteer

Flight Volunteers
You literally change the life of the animal you take with you forever. By flying a dog or cat home, you also create a free spot for another animal in need back in the shelter. Many rescue organizations can only help so many animals as they have free space. By flying an animal to their new home, you help the organization rescue another animal that can take his- or her place.

Big To The Rescue
Equipped with a trusty single engine airplane (C-GIOT), Jayson and Natalie volunteer their time and assist various local rescue organizations in the Pacific Northwest to deliver supplies and quickly transport seals, dogs, birds, and animals of all kinds from remote areas to appropriate rehabilitation centers and/or new forever homes.

Rescue All Dogs (RAD)
A non-profit organization focused on rescuing dogs that have been abused, neglected, abandoned, or are scheduled to be euthanized in high kill shelters. Originally begun in 2018,  it evolved into its own rescue organization which utilizes a volunteer-based network of foster homes, veterinarians, and trainers.  Dogs, which are taken into RAD’s program, go through an extensive medical and personality assessment before being prepared for their “furever” homes during the foster phase. Often it involves rehabilitation and training as well. Despite its small personnel footprint, since RAD has started its rescue operations it has had a large geographic footprint by pulling its rescues from around the world. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Montreal, Quebec, RAD has regularly rescued dogs not only from Canada but also from the United States and overseas in the Middle East.

Do not support puppy mills  –  No Puppy Mills Canada

A puppy mill is a large-scale commercial dog breeding facility that prioritizes profit over the well-being of animals. At puppy mills, female dogs are continuously bred in poor conditions without breaks. The overbred mothers and puppies receive minimal veterinary care and socialization.

How To Report Animal Abuse and Neglect – The Responsibility Lies On You!   Sometimes we need to make time to do the right thing. If an animal is being abused, it’s one of those times.

Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”  A beautiful quote from St. Mother Teresa.
